Helpful hints for an enjoyable Holiday season….

It’s the time of the year when there doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day for any of us. With work, school, family and all of the seasonal obligations we often are so busy we neglect simple rules of safety. Here are a few things to keep in mind over the coming weeks of the holidays………..

Shopping: Remember, when shopping try to go with someone or a group so you don’t over burden yourself. When going to stores or malls, park in well lit locations as close to the store(s) as possible. Take advantage of shuttles or trams and familiarize yourself with the surroundings. Try to locate pay phones, emergency phones, security offices and store entrances. Never leave packages, gifts, purses or handbags in visible locations in your car. Securing packages in the trunk is always your best method. When handling cash inside the store, never flash large amounts of money for others to see. Protect yourself against fraud by limiting your credit card purchases to stores you normally patronize and guard your receipts.

Driving: Be cautious! An alert driver is a smart driver. Unfortunately the holidays can often cause drivers to be on their worst behavior. Speeders, careless drivers and even those under the influence can often cause accidents. Police patrols throughout the State of New Jersey are increased during the Holiday season in an effort to detect and apprehend aggressive drivers and DWI’s. Be certain to equip your car with smart supplies. A good spare tire, jumper cables and basic tools are a good start. Take your cell phone along, but as always, use it wisely when safely pulled curbside or in an off roadway lot. Make certain children are properly restrained in car seats or safety belts. For exact details on the new child seat laws, contact your local police department. Just use your head, plan your travel time accordingly avoiding the need to rush.

Home safety: Check any and all of the holiday lighting you use. If wiring looks old or damage NEVER take a chance on using it anyway. Electrical fires can lead to the destruction of property and loss of life very quickly. Make sure you unplug tree lights when away from the home whether the tree is real or artificial. Use festive candles cautiously as well. Candles too close to furniture, drapery or other flammable materials can ignite suddenly. Using candles when they can be observed is the smartest thing to do. It’s also a great time to check your smoke detectors to make sure they are in working order. Replace any batteries in question and keep a multi-use fire extinguisher or two in the house with easy access. Your local fire department can assist you with detailed suggestions for fire safety throughout the home. In Fanwood call: 322-7020 for advice.

While we’re talking about home safety, let’s address protecting your home against burglary. Set lights on timers and always lock your door and windows. If you have an alarm system, arm it before you leave. Let friends or neighbors know when you will be away so they can keep an eye on your house and return the favor if they go away. The more eyes and ears used, the better off everyone is.

Finally, we urge everyone to call the police for anything that looks or sounds suspicious. Do not hesitate, if it is a Police-Fire or Medical emergency, dial 9-1-1. For other calls in Fanwood call 322-5000. In closing, enjoy the holiday season with family and friends, be smart, be safe and be kind……….
