New Child Safety Seat Law, takes effects December 1, 2001

Due to the significant changes in the new Child Safety Seat law, we would like to clarify some of the many questions and concerns we are receiving on this matter.

Here's what the new law requires:

  • Children up to age 8 or 80 pounds ride in an approved child restraint system or booster seat anywhere in the vehicle.

  • Children under the age of 8 that weigh more than 80 pounds are not required to use a child restraint system, but are required to use a seat belt, preferably in the rear seat of the vehicle.

  • Children over the age of 8 that weigh less than 80 pounds are not required to use a child restraint system, but are required to use a seat belt, preferably in the rear seat of the vehicle.

  • Passengers between the ages of 8 and 18 must wear a safety belt when seated anywhere in a passenger automobile.

  • Drivers are responsible for properly securing children in the vehicle.
