SPRING BRINGS MORE THAN JUST FLOWERS…BEWARE OF SCAM ARTISTS!

With the advent of Spring comes a few scams that seem to occur almost as regularly as the change of season itself. Two popular scams being carried out are ones you can easily prevent.

First, the driveway “sealer” deal of the century. This one is really slick, no pun intended…someone usually approaches you driving an older, usually non-descript work truck like a small dump or pick up truck. They explain how they were in the area doing numerous paving jobs and “just happen” to have excess paving material they have to get rid of. Then they offer you the super blow-out price you just can’t turn down.. Please, turn it down, most of the time these con artists will simply coat your driveway with spent dirty oil, they’ll tell you to avoid parking for several days. In fact, they probably sprayed used motor oil on your driveway, at first glance it’s shiny and actually decent looking, but in fact you just bought yourself one giant clean-up, and a costly one at that. The con men that try this scam usually have no markings on their truck(s) and will write bills on questionable stationary. Rarely are they ever from a local, verifiable address. We can’t urge you enough to avoid the headache of oil spill clean-up and worse yet, paying hundreds of dollars for it.

Another popular scam right now is visitor(s) at your front door, preoccupying you while an accomplice enters your home and ransacks your master bedroom or bedrooms. They have this one down to an art form, often these scam artists will travel in groups. Sometimes they will play on your sympathy asking for help with a disabled vehicle or some similar problem. Others may even pose as repairmen or utility meter readers. We can not emphasize enough…NEVER let someone in your home EVER, unless you are 100% certain they are legitimate, i.e. you called them to respond. If you are in doubt, ask them to wait outside, call the company they claim to represent, or if you’re scared and nervous call the Police on the regular business line. If you ever see anyone on the outside of your or your neighbor’s home lurking around windows or basement doors, call us without delay. It’s easier for us to check and be wrong than not to check and find a burglary later.

These are just a few scams carried out by professional thieves and burglars, you can easily avoid being victimized by being diligent. Look out for your neighbors as well, common sense will usually prevail. If you have any questions, comments, concerns or suggestions, please contact the Fanwood Police department and we will be glad to assist you.
