“Rules of the road for a safe spring and summer”

Put away the snow shovel and store your de-icer for another time, It’s baseball weather! With the advent of spring and summer upon us it’s important to concentrate even more on our driving skills, especially around parks, playgrounds and school areas.

One of the sure signs of enjoyable weather is the ice cream or ice truck. As motorists there are certain statutes that are in place to help us follow safety guidelines. To help remind us how important it is to exercise extra caution around these vehicles.

Frozen dessert trucks, i.e. ice cream and Italian ices, should be treated very similarly as school busses are. Remember they are attracting people, especially young children to them. As adults we are aware of our surroundings, children often become pre-occupied and will quickly run toward one of these trucks without the thought of consequence. As a driver be aware, and treat these vehicles with care. The State of New Jersey provides the following rules governing vehicle operation around one of these trucks and here they are:

The driver of a vehicle approaching or overtaking from either direction a frozen dessert truck stopped on the road shall stop before reaching the truck when the flashing red lights (like a school bus) and stop signal arm are in use. After stopping, a driver may proceed past the truck at a reasonable and prudent speed, not to exceed 15 miles per hour, and shall (must) yield the right of way to any pedestrian who crosses the road to or from the frozen dessert truck”  N.J.S.A. 39:4-128.4

As important as these rules are, it is equally important for anyone observing violations to contact the police at once. Another critical factor for the safety of children is for any lack of proper warnings from the truck operator to also be reported. Drivers of these vehicles are supposed to be well versed in the proper operation of the warning lights and stop signal arm and in order for the safety to be certain, these rules must be followed by the truck operators as well. So, in closing, enjoy the nice weather as we will soon be shoveling again, but don’t neglect the importance of safety while driving. Remember, safety is everyone’s concern.
